How to own a wind tunnel

Through Freeflight you can own your own vertical wind tunnel and negotiate to receive exclusive geographical rights to your region as part of your purchase.

What you receive when you purchase Freeflight:

  • Ownership of a fully tested and operational vertical wind tunnel
  • Experienced staff for all phases of implementation from construction, testing, assembly on your site, and full service commissioning services.
  • Personal support from our lead engineer
  • On-site flyer and operator training tapes
  • Income producing ideas and promotion
  • First priority over your assigned geographical region

As each site and owner will have their specific requirements, Freeflight has based the price upon three factors.

  • a. Flying capacity required
  • b. Noise levels
  • c. Specialised customer requirements

Flying Capacity

Freefall Xtreme’s vertical wind tunnel operating in Rotorua, New Zealand was designed to fly one person at a time. We believe this is the best set-up as most flyers are beginners and by flying one at a time they receive personalised attention.

Noise constraints

Every local municipality has bylaws that specify maximum noise levels. Specifications typically are in noise levels for different zones and at different times during the day. The lower the required noise level the greater the noise attenuation required and the greater the cost. For instance, in Rotorua the maximum decibel levels permitted are 75dba at 50 metres and 40dba at 300 metres. The Rotorua vertical wind tunnel has a noise attenuation system that permits Freefall Xtreme to operate at full power while complying with local noise requirements. To our knowledge this has never been achieved anywhere in the world with a motor of this size.

Specialised customer requirements

We cannot anticipate special requirements desired by our customers or required by local municipalities. Variables might include soil stability issues, external cosmetic requirements etc. We must understand any local council restrictions for noise and other conservation issues.

We offer complete implementation services for our vertical wind tunnels. We simply ask our customers to prepare the site to our specifications and secure clearance of all customs and import certifications. On the site customers need to prepare the groundwork with a three to six meter deep, 16 meter wide hole with a retaining wall and several other concrete components.

Shipment by land requiring more than two hours will require additional costs. We will construct, test, disassemble, and ship to the nearest port. We will provide on-site assistance during the reassemble and commissioning. The assembly and commissioning requires three to six weeks, which includes comprehensive training for operators and flight assist staff.

Pricing

The price, for a solution of similar capacity and appearance to the VWT located in Rotorua, is approximately $US 900,000. This includes production in our workshop in Wellington, testing, dismantling and shipping. It also includes the engine, propeller, gearbox, and engine management system.

Excluded from this price are any duty or customs clearance fees payable on importation. Costs for site preparation is also excluded. We assume that our customers have prepared the site to our specifications at their expense.
